Help! I am constantly blaming the dog for my…ahem…gas!

*Warning* this post might contain some potty talk!

Why do I feel bloated, gassy, have diarrhea or constipation when I didn’t even eat the magical fruit?  Every time I eat certain foods my stomach gurgles for hours and my pants don’t zip. And why do I know where all the public bathrooms are?

Ok friends, pull up a chair and let’s talk about it. Think about this, your digestive system is actually the foundation of your health. Anything you put in your mouth goes through that system and is absorbed or released. Many health factors can be undermined if you don’t digest and absorb nutrients well.  Getting those nutrients (vitamins, minerals, proteins, and essential fatty acids) to the right place is required so you feel great and continue to feel great throughout your life.

Any therapeutic program you may use will be of limited value without good digestive function.  Here’s an interesting factoid: your bowel has 10 times more bacteria than you have cells in your body.  80% of the dry weight of your stool is bacteria!  I find that amazing.  (I also find it amazing that someone dries out poop and weighs it).  When you feed your body, you are feeding your bacteria.  They in turn grow, reproduce, and release chemicals all of which drastically effects your bowel…and you. There may be a different way to look at the statement, “you are what you eat.”  Maybe it should be, “you are what you AND your bacteria eat.”

So how do you feed your bacteria properly? You guessed it, it starts with your food choices. If your bowel is relatively healthy and most of this doesn’t apply to you, try adding these two things to your diet: organic Kefir (I love Green Valley plain) or organic fermented foods (I love Bubbies Organic Sauerkraut).  On the other hand, if this article resonates with your unfriendly digestive issues, your bowel may not be able to handle these PRE-biotic foods and until we fix the underlying issues, you may want to stay away from them.  In that case, we need to talk!

If you are having any issues with your digestive system and need some help, give me a call and let’s get things moving (sorry – last potty joke!).
